What to do in a plumbing emergency depends on the nature of the problem but a good rule of thumb is:
If something is leaking, then turn your water off at the stopcock. Your stopcock is usually found underneath your kitchen sink and looks like an outside tap handle connected to your plumbing. Turning this off should stop the leak and limit damage to your home while you wait for a repair.
If something is blocked, stop using it where possible.
If you can smell gas, the best thing to do is evacuate the area and call Cadent’s gas leak helpline on 0800 111 999. You can also close your gas valve at your gas meter, too, but the gas leak helpline will guide you safely through what to do in your specific situation.
To DIY or not to DIY? That is the question. Our plumbing guides help you make sense of your plumbing problems, so you can have a go yourself or get them sorted by one of our pros.
